Comed-K will not share seats with govt this time, Announces Dates

It’s private colleges vs state government yet again. The admission season to professional courses started off on a stormy note with the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges-Karnataka (Comed-K) deciding not to share a single seat with the government next year.

It has even gone ahead and announced the dates for the Undergraduate Entrance Test (UGET) and Post-Graduate Entrance Test (PGET) on May 8 and February 13, 2011, respectively.

“On November 17, Comed-K decided to go ahead with merit determination of 100% seats. The state government has not kept its word on the consensual agreement signed last year. They only want seats, not work for it,” Shamanur Shivashankarappa, president, Karnataka Private Medical and Dental Colleges Association, told STOI.

The government warned the association of “serious action” if it fails to fall in line. “We have called for a meeting on December 2 to dis
cuss the issue. We’re ready to listen to their problems. We have kept a legislation in abeyance which we will enforce to make the association fall in line in the interest of students,” higher education minister V S Acharya said.

Comed-K’s decision means the Common Entrance Test conducted by the state government will be reduced to just government colleges
and 25% of seats shared by deemed universities in the state. Comed-K has 11 medical, 25 dental and 148 engineering colleges under its ambit. This year, over 1.1 lakh candidates appeared for the CET, while 67,000 candidates took the UGET.
This year, Comed-K had shared 35% of its dental, 42% medical and 50% engineering seats with the state government.

UGET ON MAY 8, PGET ON FEB 13

  • The Undergraduate Entrance Test (UGET) 2011 that decides admission to over 180 professional colleges in the state will be on May 8, 2011.
  • Comed-K, which administers the exam, said UGET 2011 would be conducted across Karnataka but candidates from all over the country are eligible to take it.
  • Comed-K PGET 2011 entrance examination will be conducted on February 13 for admission to PG medical and dental courses and only in Bangalore. The calendar of events and details about the examination will be notified later. “This year’s entrance exam will test the comprehension skills too,” said executive secretary of Comed-K, S Kumar.
